Medical Expertise: Writing & Editing
|
|
As a writer for health care texts we
have deep experience in presenting complex medical information in
an understandable way. We focus on unscrambling the complicated, spotting
the omissions and inconsistencies, and on confirming the known data. |
| |
|
As editors we were relied on by writers
to optimize their effectiveness by suggesting the most logical structure,
best word choice, and most readable format. Listed below are a few
notable projects prepared for Pacific Heritage Assurance (PHA), a
health care insurance carrier. |
| |
|
To give you a good idea of what you
can expect from working with Smith Editing, we have also included
many project samples. You can click the links in the project descriptions
below, or go to Technical Samples,
Corporate Samples, and Medical
Samples pages directly. |
Procedure manuals
|
|
Claims manual, 1000 pages. Presented
a myriad of medical conditions with coverage and claims processing
information for health care claims adjusters. Federal and state mandates
and customized policies drove the content and deadlines for this text.
Claims processing accuracy was maintained consistently high with support
from this manual. Prepared bi-monthly updates and joined with another
writer to reorganize the manual. |
| |
|
Billing
Procedures manual, 250 pages. The key parts to this manual
were the enrollment, eligibility, and termination chapters. Revenue
to the insurance company was determined by how well the billing clerks
performed these functions. Billing accuracy was maintained consistently
high with support from this manual. Prepared bi-monthly updates. |
| |
|
Underwriting Procedures manual,
100 pages. Wrote procedures for assessing risk and setting profitable
rates. The insurance company had never before codified the art of
guessing and intuition, and was insuring too many bad-risk groups.
Senior management and the underwriters welcomed the manual’s thoroughness
and actuarial approach. |
| |
|
Annuity Procedures manual, 75
pages. Annuities documentation was antiquated. Completely rewrote
all instructions including those for making deposits and withdrawals
from annuity funds, processing annuity loans, and handling rollovers.
The actuaries were able to perform annuity tasks much more efficiently
with useful instructions. |
| |
|
Updated a collection of procedure manuals
including the prescription drug, customer service, reinsurance procedures,
and system administrator manuals on a bi-monthly basis. |
Standards manual
|
|
Programming
Standards and Reference manual, 350 pages. In this new manual
provided IS department programmers with programming standards, procedures,
and reference information. This information greatly improved consistency
and maintainability of customized applications. |
Computer-based training
|
|
Computer-based training module. Team
product designer and sole user test planner for a multimedia CBT training
program that trained health insurance claims adjusters, billing clerks,
underwriters, and policy issue staff about partially-self-funded health
insurance plans. |
Marketing collateral
|
|
Marketing
brochures, four pages each. Wrote three brochures that launched
a new corporate look and gave updated information to brokers about
health insurance products. |
| |
|
Reporting
Services manual, 50 pages. Provided descriptions and samples
of reports that firms could print to keep apprised of claims, benefits
utilization, and funding activity. Intended as a reference tool, this
manual had surprising effectiveness as a marketing tool. Team writer
of new manual. |
